What is a Brazilian wax?

What is a Brazilian wax?

It's when an aesthetician uses wax to get rid of the hair that along the bikini area. A Brazilian includes the strands along the vagina lips and in your behind. You have an option of leaving a triangle or landing strip of hair on top or you can also leave it bare.

Why choose Brazilian over shaving?

Because waxing pulls out the hair from its roots, while shaving is just cutting the pubic hair. After the waxing when it grows back it is thinner and tapered so it is less likely to get trapped under the skin. For bikini areas, waxing is more precise and can result in less razor bumps because of the delicate skin area. With waxing, there’s the added benefit of light exfoliation. Because the substance adheres to the top layer of skin, it can remove dead skin cells to reveal a softer underlying layer.

What methods are available?

- Soft wax : The wax is applied with a disposable spatula (if you ever see the spatula being put back into the wax pot, then RUN AWAY!) Once wax is applied on the skin, the wax is then removed with a strip. Now the way it's being done can be different from one person to another. But the skin should be hold tight, and the strip should be remove real FAST and in the opposite side that the hair grows. The entire process can take anywhere between 5/15min on average depending on the amount of hair there is.

- Hard wax : Wax is applied with a spatula on the skin, then the wax harden after a little moment, then the wax is being flicked away on the edge and remove by hand real FAST by the beautician. The entire process can take anywhere between 20/45min on average depending on the amount of hair there is.

- Sugar wax : This wax is made from using a sugar paste mixed with lemon juice and sugar. The paste is rolled in the hand and applied with the pressure of the finger of the beautician. It tends to hurt less than waxing because it pulls less hair out at one time so the paste needs to be reapplied to same area several times. The entire process can take anywhere between 30/45min on average depending on the amount of hair there is.

How long should the hair be for a Brazilian wax?

Your hair has to be at least 1/4-inch long, or around the size of a grain of rice, before you get a bikini wax. This helps ensure that hair is completely removed from its root. To measure your hair length, try grasping the hairs and pulling them up. If you’re unable to grasp the hairs without also pinching your skin, they might not be long enough yet.

How often should you get a Brazilian wax?

Everybody's hair growth is very different. It depends on the ethnicity, age, sex and prior hair removal that were done on the area. But it could be anywhere between 2.5weeks for the less lucky up to 6weeks for the most lucky one ;)

Make sure to always schedule your next appointment before you leave, in that case that will prevent you from going bananas when it starts growing and you cant get an appointment at your favourite spa near you.

Is there anyone who shouldn't get a Brazilian wax?

Your skin might be more sensitive to waxing if you’re taking the following medications:

  • Antibiotics

  • Hormone replacement therapy

  • Hormonal birth control

  • Accutane

  • Retin-A or other retinol-based cream

With waxing, there’s always a chance of side effects, including:

  • Pain

  • Redness

  • Irritation

  • Rash

  • Bumps

  • Sun sensitivity

  • Allergic reaction

  • Infection

  • Ingrown hairs

  • Scarring

  • Burns

That's why always very important to research the place you going to. Make sure the person is experienced, the place is clean. Wipes should be at your disposal before and after your treatment. The beautician should be wearing gloves, and let you know about the process if this is your first time.

Things to know prior to getting your first Brazilian wax?

If you are worry about the pain, you could take something that will relaxes you 30min to 1hr prior to your appointment (some take advil, tylenol or CBD oil can also be an option if you have a prescription). Regardless it's your first time or not you should always exfoliate prior to getting a Brazilian wax, so any hair trapped under the skin will be removed during your treatment. Do NOT tan 24hours prior (if you want to do a spray tan do it after a wax).

Tips: the more often you wax the less and less pain you will get with each visit.

If you're prone to ingrown hairs, reach for pads or scrubs with salicylic acid two days after waxing or shaving (use them too soon and you may feel your still-sensitive skin start to burn). These gently exfoliate, allowing hair to grow back free and clear of dead skin cells and dirt so it doesn’t loop back on itself and create painful bumps.
